The wines of Yarra Yering are always highly sought-after, with the recently released 2020 vintage wines attracting a huge amount of interest. Named ‘Winery Of The Year’ in the 2022 Halliday Wine Companion, the reputation of this legendary Yarra Valley producer continues to grow.

Yarra Yering’s Underhill Shiraz is always a beautiful example of the perfumed cool-climate style Shiraz that Yarra Valley is capable of, with the 2020 release being awarded Best Shiraz at the 2021 Yarra Valley Wine Show.

The 2020 Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz is deliciously medium bodied with a touch of aniseed spice, the bright blue plum fruits bring energy to the palate and some black plums and excellent fruit concentration. As always from this block we see some cured meat and a smoke-char interest driving the back palate. A solid core of fruit, the oak is a faint seasoning that plays second fiddle to the fruit.

“97 Points. From a 3.2ha block of shiraz, planted on the far western side at Yarra Yering in 1973. Half was fermented with 20% whole bunches in one 3,500L old oak cask, pressed and returned to this cask to mature for 12 months. The other half was matured in puncheons for 12 months. A very bright, medium crimson purple. A riotous amalgam of aromas including blueberries, potpourri, licorice root, Szechuan pepper and caraway seeds. Medium bodied and elegant, this has terrific viscosity and the tannins are oh, so powdery and fine. Gorgeous now and over the next 10 years or longer.  Date: Jan 2022. 13.5% alc. Drink by: 2035.
